I brought this guy to his new home this morning. Needless to say I was sad to see him go. He was inspired by Kiki Koki. I think the original is so cute and sweet and his fondant cousin turned out pretty sweet, too.

This cake was all things Puerto Rico. Coqui, Flor de Maga, Pava hat and of course, an itty-bitty flag. Had so much fun making it. His hat was a bit of a challenge, but I finally figured it out on day 2. Instead of making the brim separate from the crown and trying to get it to stick straight up like they are supposed to, I just cut out a large circle of fondant, draped it over a circle cutter and made a slight indent for the crown, leaving the brim to hang down (eventually up).

I also made his super sturdy with an internal armature of wooden skewer and wire for the arms. It was a technique (modified for scale) that I learned recently from one of Crafsty.com‘s awesome classes. More on those in another post.

Fairy House Playtime

I had some cake left over from a mentoring session I did last week with some girls from the local elementary school, so I decided to play around. This is what I came up with.

A tiny Acorn Fairy house atop a hill. The house is about 4″ tall and has some flowering vines climbing up the side.

I really like how it turned out for a first time. The grass needs a bit more texture and the cake board is unfinished, but I don’t think my kids will mind when I carve it up for dessert tonight.

There’s something fishy going on here…

A fun little cake. Chocolate with fudge filling. Also finally had success using my Cricut cake for the lettering. Lettering is 50/50 gumpaste & fondant. Royal Icing waves.

Buttercream…

Lately I’ve been obsessing over buttercream flowers. When done well, they are so lovely. There’s a bakery in Ohio, The White Flower Cake Shoppe, whose giant non-rose flowers have me drooling on a daily basis. Tonight I found these beauties while trolling the internets. I, however, have a long way to go before I reach these buttercream heights of beauty. I’ve always loved sculpting, and that makes me fond of fondant, but not everyone is keen on it. And there’s a lot to be said about creating something beautiful and 3 dimensional out of sweetened butter.
